Scorpion’s Sting

For 2022, I’ve been wanting to write more ‘creature features’ and generally improve my short story writing. My partner got me a Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual for my birthday so I came up with the idea of writing a story every week based on a different creature from that – All There in the (Monster) Manual. Hope you enjoy!

This Week’s Inspiration: Giant Scorpion

Salma Al Aleagrab and her family flee across the deadly sands of the Great Sandy Wastes atop their scorpion mounts, pursued by a seemingly unstoppable predator. Unexpected allies and unexpected new ideas might be the only way to stay alive, free, and uneaten.

This story is based in the same setting as The Birth of Cities and Captain’s Log, although no knowledge of either is required before reading.

She’s killed the others. I don’t know if it’s better or worse that she did so out of ignorance or indifference rather than malice. My sanity verges on an abyss. My thoughts turn to vengeance.

Doug’s new gig as an overnight security guard for Irrgång sounds like a breeze, just watch the cameras and every once in a while walk around the massive furniture store. But at night, the twisting path through the showroom somehow becomes even more of a maze. And worse, there’s something in there with him.

Halfway Through a Year of All There in the (Monster) Manual!

It’s been an eventful six months for me, this first half of 2022. At the end of last year, I left my job with a radio station where I’d been working for roughly five and a half years, and volunteering at for even longer, and in January of this year I started work at another station but in a very different role. In February, I got married! Still very happy with that decision by the way, and my wife and I are looking to purchase a new place to live in the near future (Marriage tip: It’s very difficult at first to say ‘My wife’ without slipping into a Borat voice – if you’re engaged or thinking of getting engaged, start practising not doing that now!).

And of course, most importantly, this week marks six months of releasing a short story each and every week for my self-imposed ‘All There in the (Monster) Manual’ challenge! Every one of them inspired by a different creature from the Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. I haven’t missed a week yet even with all those other things going on, and I’m hoping to keep that streak going until the end of the year.

This Week’s Inspiration: Yeti

Sailors and traders have searched for years for a fabled passage through the frozen north. After two years stuck fast in ice on such a mission, Captain William Blarvey and his crew have been forced to abandon their ship and make for a nearby settlement. But the fields of ice and snow hold dangers and mysteries they have failed to anticipate.

Note: This story takes place in the same continuity as The Birth of Cities. Wooster is a city in the same vein of Yoruga, without that context this story is likely to be slightly confusing.
